About Moose Tracks Studio

The White Mountains of New Hampshire is a lovely place to live. The mountains in winter, white with snow and brilliant in the sun, give way in spring to bright green, with lovely flowers in bashful hues on the forest floor. The summer is lush and bold, preparing us for the coming brilliance of autumn leaves in red and gold. Our family has lived in the North Country for generations and we loved it enough to move permanently to Franconia in 2009, our lives enriched by nature and time in our studio. We named the studio Moose Tracks after our giant visitors’ hoof prints around the stream….. we paint, draw, and make pots and cards. Our ventures into the world of creation are works in progress. We hope to offer many more products created from our delight with life in New Hampshire. We are beginning with cards we are pleased to share and know you will be proud to send.

This series of photos shows the process of building the arch over the fire pit and ware floor of the wood-burning kiln. The first photo shows the kiln ready to begin the arch and the second photo shows the arch form under construction in the Moose Track Studio building. The third photo shows the arch form in position on the kiln base; the fourth photo shows the arch brick being laid against the arch form. The fifth photo shows the scaffolding in place to support the form as it is dropped and removed. The next photo shows the arch form coming out of the arch, and the final photo shows the arch standing free, looking through the arch from the fire pit towards the chimney under construction to the rear. The keystone is cast refractory concrete. This spring we will complete the chimney, stucco the arch with a mixture of refractory concrete over an insulating blanket, build a supporting framework of angle iron, fill the kiln with pots, build a removable front wall, and fire for the first time!
